I’m still holding out hope that I’ll discover a last-minute invite for Britney’s big 27th B-day bash at Tenjune tonight. I mean, I went out and got a new top hat just for the occasion! But just in case my name doesn’t show up on the guest list, I’ve already imagined how the festivities might go down — and if she’s really serious about restoring her health and image, she might consider partying like it’s 1999 again.

Oh, how we love to remember the 20th-century Britney. She was so young, so fit and, as far as we know, sober. If she intends on maintaining that hot bod she showed off today during her “Good Morning America” performance, she might consider laying off the liquor and sticking to her pre-millennium party mixers of choice: soda and juice.

We remember those crazy carbonated days because she allowed MTV News to shoot a slumber party she staged a few nights before the 1999 Grammys with girl group Innosense — another Lou Perlman pop creation that Brit was briefly a member of before she became famous on her own. In what was probably an attempt to get her former bandmates some extra MTV exposure, the not-yet-legal ladies slipped into their PJ’s, tore open a few bags of Cheetos and talked about how hot Paul Walker was. Sadly, Innosense were never heard from again.

Happy 27th, Britney! Here’s to you sticking to your new healthy ways. And what a difference a year makes! You rang in your 26th birthday with two people you’ve since cut out of your life: ex-”manager” Sam Lutfi and former personal assistant and self-proclaimed cousin Alli Sims. Hopefully, those circus days are over.

Britney Spears gets a birthday wish from Good Morning America and a crowd of thousands, in between her live performances (also posted here) on the ABC morning show. Britney debuted two new songs from her new CD, "Circus," but stopped long enough to allow Diane Sawyer and Robin Roberts gush over her and present her with a Circus birthday cake that took 60 hours to make. Happy Birthday Britney! You Go Girl!

Hudson family murders Case Update,Police confident They will Solved this Case (Video)

Police charged the estranged brother-in-law of Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Hudson with the murders of her mother, brother and nephew, expressing confidence on Tuesday the evidence was sufficient to convict.

"You can never always know how a jury will decide a case but I'm confident the evidence is there and I'm confident we'll be successful," Chicago Police Superintendent Jody Weis said.

Police said they had the murder weapon and physical evidence as well as testimony that would convict William Balfour, 27, the estranged husband of Jennifer Hudson's elder sister, Julia.

The motive for the October 24 murders involved a dispute between the two, police said.

Found dead from gunshots were Hudson's mother Darnell Donerson, 57, and brother, Jason Hudson, 29, in the family's South Side home. The body of Julian King, Julia's son, was found four days later, with the gun used in the slayings found nearby.

In addition to the slayings Balfour was charged with home invasion.

Balfour's mother Michele Balfour protested her son's innocence to reporters, saying police relied on the word of one of his girlfriends who was facing a drug charge.

"They got a botched-up investigation," she said, adding Balfour loved Hudson's mother, Donerson, more than he loved her. "But I'm still his mother."

Weis said no deals were made in exchange for witness statements implicating Balfour, who has been held on a parole violation since the slayings.

"We had citizens standing up and doing the right thing," he said.

Hudson got her start in 2005 competing on the U.S. television show "American Idol" although she failed to reach the final. She later won the role of Effie White in the 2006 musical "Dreamgirls" and earned a best supporting actress Oscar for her performance.

MIAMI - Was that the look of love Madonna and Alex Rodriguez were beaming at each other Wednesday night?

It sure looked like it to some folks at Madge's Sticky & Sweet concert at Dolphin Stadium in Miami.

As A-Rod sat in a front row between Rod Stewart and his amour's manager, Guy Oseary, Madge fixed her gaze on him and sang, "You Must Love Me."

He smiled at her, and the Material Girl got all teary-eyed.

Many in the crowd nodded knowingly when, before her rendition of "I'm So Far Away," she told fans, "I'm sure you can relate about a long-distance love affair."

In a couple of hotter moments, Madge gyrated in A-Rod's direction while winking at him and later went pneumatic on a speaker while staring his way.

Through it all A-Rod smiled, applauded and even rose to his feet when Madge - apparently in need of more crowd participation - shouted, "C'mon you mother-------, stand up and stop trying to look bored. Put your hands in the air and smell your armpits."

Apparently nothing Madge can do offends her fans or A-Rod.

She began her show two hours late because she got caught in traffic, never apologized for the delay and didn't even wish the crowd a happy Thanksgiving.

Still, they cheered like crazy.

Sources close to A-Rod confirmed Wednesday night that he's spending Thanksgiving with his soon-to-be ex-wife and her family in Miami.

"He has been planning on attending dinner with Cynthia, their daughters and her family for some time now," the source told the Daily News.

The report that A-Rod will be breaking bread with his estranged wife's family comes amid rumors that he was going to ditch dinner with his two young daughters, Natasha, 4, and Ella, 1, to host a get-together in New York for Madonna and her kids.

Say what you like about Britney, she's no shirker. While her fellow Mickey Mouse club alumni Justin Timberlake and Christina Aguilera knock out an album every three or four years, hats off to Britney for seeming to increase her work rate during a sequence of events - mental meltdown, disastrous awards-show appearances, lost custody battles, liaisons with dubious Brummie paparazzi - that would have imploded most careers.

In the thick of her public meltdown last year she somehow made time to record Blackout. A disembodied, Auto-Tuned Britney was perfectly suited to the febrile electronic sound world assembled for her by her producer-writers Nate “Danja” Hills and Bloodshy & Avant. At that moment it seemed as if the only people who cared about Britney Spears were those writing her songs.

Trumpeting her swift resurrection, Blackout's successor is clearly the record designed to win back all the people who felt that there was enough weirdness in Britney's life without listening to her weird music. It's not a bad album by any means. For the sweet languor of its chorus, Out From Under glimpses a world in which Stevie Nicks might have been enlisted to help write a few tunes for High School Musical. There's something pleasingly discombobulating too about the queasy pitch at which the recent single Womanizer unfolds.

On an album on which outright thrills are infrequent, such equivocal pleasures become magnified. It's understood that Britney wasn't given a record deal to deliver critic-titillating, metatextual future-pop, seemingly inspired by the hell of being a mentally fragile superstar in Los Angeles. It's just that she's really good at it. Co-written by Nate Hills and Marcella Araica - who wrote much of Blackout - Kill the Lights covers similar ground to that album's Piece of Me, a declaration of war on the paparazzi who provided the world with an hourly account of her breakdown. “Mr Photographer,” she hisses, ire no doubt stoked by her ill-advised affair with the Brummie snapper Adnan Ghalib, “I think I'm ready for my close-up tonight.”

Also bearing Hills and Araica's hallmarks is the gorgeous Blur, a sleepy collision of beats and warped keyboards that has Britney sounding not all that unhappy about her inability to remember what she did last night. Helping to shade in a rich purple patch in the middle of Circus, Unusual You will find a home with anyone whose love of melancholy Europop is fatal enough to take in Limahl's Never Ending Story.

Thereafter, it all gets a bit baffling really. Flouting the current convention for front-loading big albums with potential singles, the brilliant closer Amnesia - which sees big digitised Spector beats tied to a killer chorus and Britney multitracked to sound like Gwen Stefani - ends Circus on a high. Without deployment of your skip button though, you'll need to sit through one previously released song (Radar also appeared on Blackout) and some utter stinkers. The helium come-hithers of Mmm Papi couldn't be less sexy if Christine Hamilton were singing them, while the drippy Disney dreck of My Baby formalises Britney's return to pearlescent-white on-message pop.

Is this how it's going to be from now on? The Mickey Mouse Club days must seem several lifetimes ago. Why on earth would she want to go back there? (SONY, TS £12.99)

First Angelina Jolie played Christine Collins and took on an entire corrupt police force in Changeling. Now Brad Pitt and Plan B are gearing up to take on a fake cop.

Brad and Plan B are working with a team of writers to develop a biopic based on the true story of Linda Trest, a journalist in Missouri who exposed a phony cop who was supposedly cleaning up a small town’s drug problems - except that he was no longer a member of law enforcement by then.

The story sounds like it could be interesting - there’s always something fun about watching a regular parson beat the system!

It’s still very much in pre-production so at the moment there’s certainly no word on casting. For some reason I immediately pictured Julia Roberts but it might be a little too much like Erin Brokovich in that case. Time will tell!

Madonna and Ritchie Granted Divorce

Madonna and Guy Ritchie's divorce has been finalized following a hearing in London on Friday.

The British filmmaker and the Material Girl, who announced their separation last month, were granted a decree nisi by a judge at the clinical Principal Registry of the Family Division of the High Court in High Holburn, London.

The couple will reportedly share joint custody of their sons, Rocco, 8, and David, 3, who they adopted from Malawi in 2006. The boys will split their time between Madonna in the U.S. and Ritchie in the U.K.

Madonna's daughter Lourdes, 12, will live with her mother, because she is the singer's daughter from a previous relationship with Carlos Leon.

Madonna and Ritchie wed at Skibo Castle in the Highlands of Scotland in 2000. The marriage will be officially dissolved in six weeks time when they will be granted a decree absolute.

Right on for charity work, but when she is in front of the media, the timing is definitely convenient.

As far as the baby-picture selling goes, the Jolie-Pitts seem to be very involved in the editorial process. In order to win the privilege of paying $14 million for pictures of the twins this past August, People reportedly had to submit an "editorial plan" for the layout, promise to never use the moniker Brangelina and guarantee positive coverage would be positive forever. Breaking any of these rules is punishable by, er, death?

Anyone surprised? Yeah, didn't think so. It's more surprising the Times cares so much, but they have to keep it fresh over there. In other Team Aniston news, the Daily Beast just came out as a supporter, so once again we're going to have to give Jen the win this week.

London The nearly eight-year marriage of Madonna and Guy Ritchie was ended in minutes yesterday in a London court.

What began with a wedding at Skibo Castle in the Highlands came to an abrupt end in a “quickie divorce” at the Principal Registry of the Family Division in High Holburn, London. The case - Ciccone M. L. v Ritchie G. S. – was listed with 16 others before District Judge Caroline Reid “for pronouncement of decree or order under the special procedure rule”. The couple did not attend. In a sworn statement, Madonna petitioned for divorce on the ground of Ritchie’s unreasonable behaviour, which she said was “continuing”.

In another document released by the court, Senior District Judge Philip Waller, who gave the go-ahead for the divorce, said he was satisfied that the court need not exercise its powers under the Children Act nor give any directions under the Matrimonial Causes Act. This would indicate that the couple reached a settlement over assets and the children before the divorce. It is understood that they agreed not to demand a financial settlement from each other and to share custody of their boys, Rocco, 8, and the adopted David Banda, 3.

Madonna & Guy Granted Preliminary Divorce

Just one month after announcing their split, Madonna and Guy Ritchie were granted a preliminary "quickie divorce" Friday in the High Court of London.

According to a document released by the court, 50-year-old Madonna – the petitioner – said in a sworn statement that she is divorcing Ritchie for his "unreasonable behavior."

In a court proceeding that took all of one minute, the judge issued a decree nisi – the first step in the U.K.'s two-stage divorce process – to "Ciccone ML" and "Ritchie GS" and 16 other (non-celebrity) couples.

Neither Madonna or her director ex attended the hearing. In fact, even their attorneys skipped the courtroom.

It's known as "quickie divorce" because if there are no disputes in the next six weeks and one day, the couple's split will become decree absolute.

Guy Speaks Out

Ritchie, 40, who has been working in London on the set of his new movie Sherlock Holmes, seemed relieved by the speedy resolution.

He reportedly told the Daily Mirror late on Thursday, "It was never about money – never about her bloody art collection. I just wanted to settle it and move on."

He added to the paper, "I didn't raise any objections at any stage until she insisted the children lived permanently in New York." (According to British press reports, the settlement calls for sons Rocco, 8, and David, 3, to split time between the U.S. and London. Madonna's 12-year-old daughter Lourdes – whose father is the New York-based Carlos Leon – will live with her mother.)

Thoughts on "TWILIGHT" the movie version!

The movie version of "Twilight" is a considerable improvement over the windy bestseller on which it's based. The first half of Stephenie Meyer's vampire romance is a heaving sea of puppy-love gush. After a couple hundred pages of plucky Bella Swan and her super-cute bloodsucker boyfriend, Edward Cullen, endlessly expressing their mutual adoration ("His beauty lit up the kitchen," "Just give me a minute to restart my heart"), I was sure I felt a coma coming on. Fortunately, Meyer does get down to narrative action in the second half, and it's not bad, as these things go. But it's a long book, and a long slog.

To convert this woozy tale into a movie, screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg (who also works on the excellent "Dexter" TV series) wisely approached the novel with a machete, whacking out several acres of god-awful lovebird jabber and moving the cool stuff -- mainly a trio of vicious Canadian vampire interlopers -- to the fore. This allowed the director, Catherine Hardwicke ("Thirteen"), and her editor, Nancy Richardson, to step in and give the story a desperately needed kick in its saggy pants. Unfortunately, all the snappy pacing and swooping camera movement in the world can't finesse the novel's sillier conceits; and bringing some of them into the light only makes them seem a lot sillier.

The movie, like the book, has the approximate structure of a 1950s rock-a-teen B-movie, the kind in which a good girl falls for the leader of a bad motorcycle gang to the horror of her family and friends, who just don't understand how sweet he really is. Here, the good girl is Bella (Kristen Stewart), who's moved to the rainy little town of Forks, Washington, to live with her divorced dad, Charlie (Billy Burke), the local police chief. In the cafeteria at her new high school one day, she sees a table full of weird siblings who all look like they've had their faces pushed into a flour bin. These are the Cullens, and one of them, the strange-but-yummy Edward (Robert Pattinson), is staring at Bella from beneath his big, gel-stiffened pompadour with a look of wild alarm. What is his problem?

Bella and Edward butt heads for about a minute before he saves her life a few times with some very mysterious abilities; then she starts looking at him in a new way. Adding up his endearing oddities -- extreme goth-guy pallor, serious hypothermia -- she realizes that he's a vampire. But she doesn't care. "I'm not afraid of you," she tells him. "I'm only afraid of losing you." Before long, they're off to the woods, where they coo in the trees and nuzzle in the grass amid fat, dewy mushrooms and dreamy acoustic-guitar noodlings on the soundtrack. Edward takes Bella home, out in the middle of nowhere, to meet the family. His dad (Peter Facinelli) has a sort of dead-Liberace vibe, but he's real nice, and with the exception of one sister, Rosalie (Nikki Reed), who has an obvious anger-management problem, the whole clan is very ... well, warm isn't the word, but they like Bella a lot. Her dad isn't quite so enthusiastic, but hey -- kids: what're you gonna do? He gives his okay for Edward to take Bella to the prom. They have a swell time. But then the Canadian vampires swoop back in and try to wreck everything. They're still trying at the movie's fadeout, which is the producers' gentle way of saying "sequel."

The phenomenal popularity of "Twilight," the novel, is no mystery. It doesn't simply update the vampire genre for the modern teen market -- Lord knows, that's been done. What it does is strip vampires of their murky erotic threat and present them as chaste, untroubling love objects for young teen girls. (Bella and Edward are supposed to be 17, but they don't act that way: Bella's never even had a date.) There's not a whisper of sex in the book, and none in the movie -- which is problematic. Pattinson, such an appealing presence in the Harry Potter films, has been directed here to smolder in such an outlandishly sultry manner that you wonder why he never displays any carnal interest in Bella. Is he gay? (That might have been interesting, actually.) And it doesn't help that he and his vampire brothers have been so heavily caked with face powder and overloaded with hair product that they look like a troupe of unusually fey mimes. (At the screening I attended, the young girls in the audience erupted in squeals of delight when Pattinson's name came up in the opening credits, but downshifted into what sounded like uneasy giggles when he put in his first actual appearance.)

It's the pretty Stewart who holds the movie together, bracing the largely passive character of Bella with glimmers of spirit and determination. She's solidly matched by Reed (who cowrote and starred in "Thirteen") and by Ashley Greene, who plays Edward's other sister, the clairvoyant Alice, as a cheery punkette. And I kind of wish the movie had more of Jackson Rathbone, who plays Edward's brother, Jasper, with a weird, demented intensity.

Certain elements of "Twilight" were doomed to fail on film. Vampire baseball, for instance, was already a tough sell in the novel; here, with all its leaping and zooming around, it looks like a special-ed Quidditch match. And one of Meyer's more curious inventions -- vampires who don't shrivel in the sun, but sparkle instead -- is a bizarre thing to actually see. When Edward soaks up some rays and goes all glittery, he looks like he just stumbled home from an all-night rave.

These attempted additions to the vampire canon seem all the more lusterless in light of the many genre staples that have been cast aside: no coffins, no bat transformations or crucifix panics, no silver-phobia. There's a very brief dream scene in which we see Edward bent over Bella's neck and then rising up with the traditional rivulet of blood running down his chin. It's a sudden reminder of how much dumb fun is missing from this oddly neutered neo-horror movie, and how little is being offered in its place. In "Twilight," the only characters drained dry are the vampires themselves.

There’s just something about women, politics, and clothes, isn’t there? Vanity Fair has a full list of every item the dream wardrobe the Republican party purchased could have purchased for Sarah Palin during the campaign, including a Chanel suit for $11,755, the Valentino jacket that Palin wore at the 2008 Republican National Convention for $4,990, a pair of Christian Louboutin croc pumps for $4,300, and a Dior Leather trim jacket, which at $2,385 was just enough to push her spending spree to a cool $152,335. They went slightly over budget though, in their spree, spending $152,335. Since the election, Palin has returned everything she did buy and resumed dressing in her own clothes.

2. She cooks a mean salmon and halibut casserole

One of Sarah Palin’s post-election interviews was with “Today’s” Matt Lauer, whom she invited to her home in Wasilla and served a salmon and halibut casserole to. Lauer reportedly enjoyed it.

Rumors are flying and fingers are pointing regarding who broke up with whom and why. One account claims that Madden, 29, isn't pleased with the attention that Prince William, 26, has been paying Hilton, 27, ever since they started hanging out on the set of "Paris Hilton's My New BFF" show in London. Although security concerns prevent confirmation, it's rumored that the Royal will attend a New Year's Eve bash with Hilton in Australia to launch a social networking site.

Another account claims that Hilton has been seeking attention elsewhere and was even photographed getting cosy with her ex Stavros Niarchos in Miami. Michael Jackson Expected to Appear at London High Court Monday to Testify

The Bahraini prince accusing Michael Jackson of reneging on a multi-million-dollar contract took the stand in London's High Court today to be cross-examined by the King of Pop's legal team, whose client is expected to testify Monday.

Sheik Abdullah bin Hamad Al Khalifa, 33, answered questions about his relationship and business dealings with Jackson, 50, on day three of the hearing, which could last up to 12 days.

Meanwhile, Jackson was summoned to appear in the London High Court next week, although his lawyers had argued that he was too ill to attend the proceedings and hoped he could testify via video link from Los Angeles.

But the prince's lawyers protested the claim, saying that the medical evidence was insufficient. And, in court today, Jackson's lawyer, Robert Englehart, said that Jackson was medically cleared to travel to London.

Jackson is expected to take the stand Monday at 2 p.m. local time. Cameras are banned in the courts of Britain.

The prince is suing Jackson to the tune of $7 million for what he alleges was Jackson's backing out of an agreement that was to have included work on an album, a screenplay and an autobiography.

Jackson's lawyer repeatedly pressed the prince about the pop star's mental condition at the time of their talks, asking if he believed Jackson was "emotionally vulnerable." Bin Hamad Al Khalifa disagreed, saying that Jackson was "composed" and "with it."

"Michael is very switched on," he said, also describing Jackson as a "fantastic businessman" and an intellectual.

Early questioning also surrounded the prince's relationship with Jackson's brother, Jermaine. Bin Hamad Al Khalifa said that Jermaine Jackson "was interested in doing music" and that the two were "planning to do a record."

Bin Hamad Al Khalifa's lawyers declined to speak to ABCNews, saying they could not comment during the hearings. The judge also made it clear that bin Hamad Al Khalifa was not permitted to speak to the media while the case is ongoing.

Bin Hamad Al Khalifa's dealings with Jermaine Jackson took place between late 2004 and early 2005, according to today's testimony. The prince reportedly paid for Jermaine Jackson's travel to and from Bahrain and purchased a Rolls Royce car for him in California. These expenses tallied nearly $450,000, and the prince acknowledged today that he never expected the money to be paid back.

But while the prince had hopes of going into business with Michael's older brother, the four songs he recorded with Jermaine Jackson were never released, he testified. He said that Jermaine Jackson also began to get sidetracked with other business interests.

During testimony on his relationship with Michael Jackson, the prince said that he and Jackson began by speaking on the phone. When the prince became interested in bringing Michael Jackson to his record label, 2 Seas Records, Jackson made his terms clear.

Recounting the conversation, the prince said, "If any brother or [Jackson] family member worked there [the record label], I'm not going to do the deal," referring to Jackson's comments.

Jackson and bin Hamad Al Khalifa had what was described in court today as "very involved" conversations about a potential musical collaboration, which doesn't amount to a binding agreement, Jackson's lawyers are arguing. These conversations took place while Jackson was facing trial on child molestation charges in 2005.

The prince constructed a recording studio after Jackson had "expressed interest in coming back into music," bin Hamad Al Khalifa said.

Bin Hamad Al Khalifa also provided $1 million to the King of Pop through Jackson's personal assistant, Grace Rwaramba, which Jackson understood to be a gift, according to testimony. But the prince thought otherwise.

"To me it was never seen as a gift," bin Hamad Al Khalifa told the High Court. "These payments were seen as helping Michael, and numerous times he told me he would pay me back."

In what would have to be the biggest pay out for a seven week memoir, Sarah Palin is rumored to have been offered $7million to write her biography. I know that Sarah is 44 years old, but we’re really only interested in how she handled the scrutiny of the campaign.

Literary agents were queuing up to sign Palin to a book deal that could earn her up to $US7 million, The Times reported.

The recent election campaign was sure to result in hundreds of books by journalists and politicians, but “Palin’s personal account of her tumultuous introduction to national politics” would be the most lucrative story, it said.

“Every publisher and a lot of literary agents have been going after her,” said Jeff Klein of Folio Literary management.

“She’s poised to make a ton of money,” public relations expert Howard Rubenstein said.

A spokesman for publisher Random House told the New York Post: “There are several of our imprints who are eager to talk to Governor Palin. She clearly has a constituency and we know books by conservatively-centred politicos usually sell very, very well.”

While it is true that Sarah came into the spotlight relatively unknown, and we’re all kind of curious about her credentials and background, what I’d really like to read is a book written by those people within the republican party who snitched on her in the days following the election. The ‘she doesn’t know what Africa is’ guy, and the one who blabbed that her clothing and make-up budget was actually higher than the $20,000+ a week she spent. I definitely want to see all those clothes!

The Times suggests that she is following in Obama’s footsteps, whose Audacity of Hope book was what they call his springboard to the presidency. Letting us know about herself, and gaining some sympathy for being a working mother, and showing some sort of intelligence, could easily lead into a ticket at the next presidential election.

It is also suggested that talk shows and other opportunities have been offered to Sarah Palin. They say the book deal will be finalized by the end of the month.

Michael Jackson might be too sick to travel to London to testify in a suit claiming he owes an Arab sheikh $7 million, the pop star's attorney said Tuesday.

Jackon is seeking to give his testimony by video link from the United States.

"It would be unwise for him to travel, given what's he's got now," lawyer Robert Englehart said, declining to elaborate "for the obvious reasons."

Al Khalifa's lawyer, Bankim Thanki, said the medical evidence presented by Jackson's legal team was "very unsatisfactory" and Jackson's illness could be treated with a bandage "if the diagnosis is positive."

"It's not the first time a sick note has been presented by Mr. Jackson," Thanki said, also without elaborating.

Jackson has often been seen wearing a surgical mask in public. In one infamous 2002 court appearance in California, he appeared to have a bandage hanging from his hollowed-out nose.

Despite much speculation about his radically changed appearance over the years, he has denied having had any alterations to his face other than two operations on his nose to help him breathe better to hit higher notes.

The judge in the current case, Nigel Sweeney, said he would decide the question of Jackson's travel on Thursday to allow time for medical experts on both legal teams to talk.

Sheikh Abdulla bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the second son of the king of Bahrain, claims that Jackson reneged on a contract for an album, a candid autobiography and a stage play, after accepting millions from the sheikh.

Al Khalifa was in court Tuesday for the second day of arguments and testimony.

The case is being tried in London by mutual agreement, Al Khalifa's representatives have said. It is due to wrap up by the end of the month.

Al Khalifa felt betrayed when the pop star pulled out of the deal, Thanki said.

After Jackson left Bahrain, never to return, his publicist later called Al Khalifa to say Jackson no longer wanted any part of the contract. Thanki said.

"It's fair to say my client felt a considerable sense of betrayal by someone he thought was a close friend," Thanki said, adding that the sheikh, an amateur songwriter, also felt "a sense of professional failure."

Thanki said Al Khalifa and Jackson were planning to establish a joint venture to put out a new Michael Jackson album, an autobiography, and a stage play.

They hoped to make millions from the project — Jackson's autobiography, intended to be "a frank and personal account" of the singer's life, was alone expected to rack up $24 million, Thanki said. In the meanwhile, Al Khalifa gave Jackson millions of dollars to help shore up his finances and subsidize Jackson's lifestyle in the small Gulf state.

Thanki said Al Khalifa considered the money an advance on the profits Jackson would reap from their pop music project, but Englehart said the money was a gift.

"Sheikh Abdulla, fortunately for himself, had the resources to be so generous," Englehart said.

Englehart argued that Jackson wasn't bound by the deal he struck because the contract was technically signed on behalf of 2 Seas Records, a venture which never got off the ground.

"This (contract) was one brick in the building that was never built," Englehart said.

I can’t tell you how I got it, but it was leaked on the internet this week, so, if you were a fan of pirated music, you could tots find it yourself. Anyway, I’ve been listening to the record on repeat all morning/afternoon and am prepared to give it a grade. A+! All the details of its’ awesomeness, after the jump…

1. The song “If You Seek Amy” has a hidden meaning! Just say it really fast. Hee, hee. Oh Britney, you’re so crazy.

2. “Mmm Papi” is reportedly about on and off flame Adnan Ghalib. Okay, so does she call him “Papi” in the Spanish for “Daddy” way, or in the short for “Paparazzi” way? “When things get crazy/You sure do wanna save me/With this fast car/I can really get far/And don’t break my heart/Let’s make out.” Sure does sound like the early days of their relationship, when Britney would drive around Hollywood, leading the paparazzi on a wild goose chase, often with Adnan by her side.

3. “Out From Under” is a ballad that definitely seems to hint at Britney’s regrets about her failed relationship with K. Fed. To which I reply, “Girl, get over it. Plenty of hotter, better clothed, less trashy fish in the sea.”

4. There is the required lullabies for the kiddies on “Circus”, including “My Baby,” which is all about the time she spent not having custody of her kids. It’s a teary moment.

5. “Radar,” which was on her last album, “Blackout,” is on “Circus.” Why? I mean, it was one of my faves, don’t get me wrong, but I don’t need it twice.

6. “Phonography” seems to be about exchanging dirty texts and phone calls with, probably, Adnan. Using Bluetooth, needing her hands free and whatnot. What do you think her mobile of choice is? Blackberry? iPhone? Sidekick?

My favorite on the record has to be “Amnesia.” I have no clue who she’s talking about—because obviously I assume all of Britney’s lyrics are about real life—but I love the lyrics. “I forgot my name/I forgot my telephone number/If he wanna see me/He don’t even know it/I forgot my address/Damsel in distress/I forgot my boyfriend/Was the one that had bought me this bra.”

The son of an Arab monarch took the King of Pop to court Monday, charging that Michael Jackson took $7 million as an advance on an album and an autobiography that he never produced.

Lawyers for Sheikh Abdulla bin Hamad Al Khalifa of Bahrain say the money was given to Jackson as an advance on the book and joint recording project with the sheikh, who is an amateur songwriter. Jackson claims the money was a gift.

Jackson and Al Khalifa were not at London's Royal Courts of Justice as the trial opened. Jackson's lawyers said he would seek permission to testify by video link from the United States.

Bankim Thanki, a lawyer for Al Khalifa, said the royal first spoke to Jackson by telephone while the singer was on trial in California on charges of child molestation.

Al Khalifa wanted to work with Jackson on rebuilding his career, Thanki said. To that end, the sheikh spent millions paying Jackson's legal fees, moving him to Bahrain and supporting Jackson, his family and entourage.

The expenses included $350,000 for a European vacation for Jackson and his associates, Thanki said.

"The cost even included the expenses of bringing out Mr. Jackson's hairdresser," Thanki said. "It's not a conventional commercial dispute."

The lawyer said Jackson and the sheikh became close and at one time both were living in a palace in Abu Dhabi owned by Al Khalifa's father, Sheikh Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, the king of the oil-rich country. The singer stayed nearly a full year in Bahrain as a guest of the son, who serves as the governor of the country's Southern Province.

Thanki acknowledged that Al Khalifa gave some gifts to Jackson but said that most of what Jackson received was part of a business deal.

The gifts, he said, "were essentially personal effects — watches, jewelry."

Jackson's finances fell apart after he was arrested in 2003 over allegations he molested a 13-year-old boy at his ranch. A jury cleared him of all the charges.

Last week he was forced to give up the deed on Neverland, a 2,500-acre (1,000 hectare) miniature amusement park in California named for the mythical land of Peter Pan.

"She's poised to make a ton of money," said Howard Rubenstein, New York's best-known public relations adviser.

And Jeff Klein of Folio Literary management said: "Every publisher and a lot of literary agents have been going after her."

Ms Palin's profile shows no sign of diminishing, despite Senator McCain's defeat and embittered Republicans making her the scapegoat for the party's collapse.

THE 2008 presidential campaign may be over, but Sarah Palin's moment in the spotlight has yet to run its course.

In a media marathon last week, the Republican Party's vice presidential nominee sat down for interviews with CNN's Larry King and Wolf Blitzer; had Matt Lauer of the "Today" show up to Wasilla for a family dinner; and told Fox News's Greta Van Susteren about getting the call from John McCain on her cellphone while she was admiring the local produce at the Alaska State Fair. She disdained the Republican "jerks" who spread anonymous rumors painting her as geographically illiterate, and vehemently denied the accusation that she had milked the campaign for a $150,000 wardrobe for herself and her family.

All that was a prelude to her star turn at the Republican Governors Association meeting in Miami, where she met reporters at a press conference, drew standing ovations from several hundred GOP donors, and humorously updated her fellow governors on what she'd been doing since last year's meeting.

"I had a baby," she told them. "I did some traveling; I very briefly expanded my wardrobe; I made a few speeches; I met a few VIPs, including those who really impact society, like Tina Fey."

Of course she was asked whether she plans to run for president in 2012, and of course she deflected the question. "The future is not that 2012 presidential race; it's next year and our next budgets," she said. But there can't be much doubt that Palin has become the brightest star in the GOP firmament. A whopping 91 percent of Republicans have a favorable view of her, according to a recent Rasmussen poll, and she is the runaway favorite when they are asked to rank possible contenders for the party's 2012 presidential nominee.

Elsewhere, however, the savaging of Palin continues. In The New York Times, Maureen Dowd devotes yet another column to bashing Alaska's governor ("a shopaholic whack-job diva"). The popular Washington blog Wonkette, characteristically crude, pronounces her "human garbage." At TheAtlantic.com, an obsessed Andrew Sullivan calls her "deluded and delusional . . . clinically unhinged" and describes her as a nitwit with "the educational level of a high school dropout" who "regards ignorance as some kind of achievement."

Not everyone on the left is in a gibbering rage over Palin. The feminist social critic Camille Paglia, a pro-choice Democrat, is appalled by the Democrats' anti-Palin debauch, especially their attacks on her intelligence. "As a career classroom teacher, I can see how smart she is," Paglia writes, "and, quite frankly, I think the people who don't see it are the stupid ones, wrapped in the fuzzy mummy-gauze of their own worn-out partisan dogma."

After witnessing the poise, energy, and panache with which John McCain's 44-year-old running mate handled herself on the national stage, can the backbiters working overtime to trash her intellect really believe she is nothing but a vain and ignorant airhead? Well, maybe; partisans and ideologues are good at seeing only what they want to see. But they might want to recall that the last Republican to inspire such ardor and admiration among the party faithful - Ronald Reagan - was also derided as a dim bulb. Diplomat Clark Clifford called Reagan an "amiable dunce." The New Republic's Robert Wright viewed him as "virtually brain dead." Nicholas von Hoffman lamented that it was "humiliating to think of this unlettered, self-assured bumpkin being our president." That "bumpkin" became one of the greatest presidents of the 20th century.

I suspect that the loathing of Palin by so much of the opinion elite is driven not by contempt for her brainpower but by fear of her political potential. She is cheerful and charismatic, an unabashed and likable conservative who generates extraordinary grassroots enthusiasm. Tens of thousands of voters showed up at her campaign rallies, and even now, when she appears on TV, record-breaking numbers of viewers tune in. "Her politics aren't my politics," said Lorne Michaels, the creator and executive producer of "Saturday Night Live," after Palin's appearance on the show. But "I watched the way she connected with people, and she's powerful."

Whether Palin has the skill and stamina it would take to win a presidential nomination, let alone capture the White House, it is way too early to tell. But the smart money says she is a force to be reckoned with. That may be just what her critics are afraid of.

Yeah, there’s a lot of hardware going on in these pics. While the beauties of Victoria’s Secret took over the newly renovated Fontainebleau Miami Beach Hotel this weekend for the 2008 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, they had plenty of famous faces on hand cheering them on.

Celebrities spotted on the pink carpet included Paris Hilton, who was accompanied by a few of her “My New BFF” contestant pals, as well as reality star siblings Kim Kardashian and her sister Kourtney.

“We watch the show every year on TV, so it’s really cool to see it in person,” Kim told press as she mingled with fellow guests at the show, which will air December 3 at 10PM on CBS.

The first time Steve Kroft went to Barack Obama's house to interview him two weeks before his presidential campaign kickoff, Obama's daughter Sasha answered the door.

Don't expect that to ever happen again. Life has changed dramatically for the Obama family, as Kroft learned Friday in Chicago when he conducted the first postelection interview with Obama. It was for Sunday's "60 Minutes" on CBS.

The interview was a major coup for Kroft, who's marking his 20th year with the CBS News program in the middle of the year's biggest stories — the presidential campaign and the economic crisis.

Kroft was backstage with Obama when the Democrat accepted his party's nomination for president, and met him at other points in the campaign. This week's interview was his sixth, starting with that midwinter 2007 story where Obama took Kroft on a tour of the Chicago projects where he'd worked as a community organizer.

"That was particularly successful for them in getting their campaign going and having a lot of people see him talking," Kroft said. "The fact that we've been there at every critical point is important. We have been tough but fair. After having interviewed someone six times, you build a rapport with him."

Kroft sought an interview for last week's show but was told it was too soon.

Instead, he spoke with the campaign's bleary-eyed top four advisers after 1 a.m. CST on Election Night, an hour chosen by them because they wanted to rest the following few days. Adviser Robert Gibbs barely had a voice. The story helped "60 Minutes" revisit an old haunt: first place in the week's Nielsen Media Research ratings for the first time in nearly five years.

Linda Douglass, a former television journalist who was a spokeswoman for Obama's campaign, said she wasn't a part of the decision to give Kroft the first interview. But she said Obama feels like Kroft asks intelligent questions that allow him to get a message across.

"It's an old-fashioned professional relationship with a lot of mutual respect — not one of those interviews where you regard the interviewer warily but not one of those interviews where you know you are going to be thrown softballs," Douglass said.

Before he left, Kroft was taking suggestions for questions from around "60 Minutes." He said he wanted to strike a balance between making news and probing the human side about how Obama's life had changed.

"I'm interested to see if he's going to be different," he said. "I thought he was different when he made his (election night) speech in Grant Park. I thought it was an attempt to be presidential. He didn't jaunt out onto the stage. It was much less like a campaign event, and much more like an address."

The Obama interview was his seventh story already this fall season on "60 Minutes." Six of them have led the broadcast. Kroft has been responsible for two of the six duPont awards won by the show since he joined the program, and three of the 13 Peabody Awards. His office is cluttered with Emmys, too.

It was only since Mike Wallace's semiretirement a few years ago that Kroft, 63, said he no longer felt like the "young guy" at "60 Minutes."

"He's the lead player now," said Jeff Fager, the show's executive producer. "He's the first one you see as the broadcast opens. He's the senior veteran of our full-time correspondents. Week after week, especially this fall, he keeps churning out extraordinary stories."

Fager said Kroft often gravitates to the high-degree-of-diffi culty stories. When the financial crisis hit, Kroft volunteered to do not one, but two stories on credit default swaps. He considers them some of his best stories because he had to do a lot of studying to learn how to explain complicated ideas to a television audience.

Kroft's most recent Peabody, in 2003, was for a story about conflicts of interest among the government and military contractors. He's reported on Pakistan's instability, the smuggling of nuclear materials out of Russia, and was the first American journalist given access to the contamination nuclear facility in Chernobyl.

Kroft credits Fager with making the broadcast more responsive to current news stories, something viewers expect during a busy news period.

It's also important for a "60 Minutes" correspondent to show versatility and, to that end, Kroft has a story on LeBron James coming up next month. He also hopes to profile the rock band Coldplay to coincide with Grammy nominations.

Kroft said he, Lesley Stahl and Morley Safer felt a responsibility for maintaining the quality of the show as it has made the transition into a new era with correspondents like Scott Pelley and part-timers Anderson Cooper and Katie Couric. That job became tougher following the Nov. 9, 2006, death of fellow correspondent Ed Bradley.

"I felt like I had to work harder," Kroft said. "I felt like it was important, that it was an incredibly difficult loss to make up. It made me more interested in pursuing big stories that I thought the show should be pursuing. Ed did a lot of that and we all had to pick up a little bit of that."

Given cutbacks at broadcast news divisions, "60 Minutes" often feels as much of an island on TV as it was when it started four decades ago.

"Your main competition has always been the people down the hall," Kroft said.

Rapper Kanye West has been arrested

Rapper Kanye West has been arrested for allegedly assaulting a photographer as he was leaving a nightclub in Newcastle, England.

The hip-hop star is said to have been involved in a scuffle with the paparazzi as he exited the Tup Tup club in the early hours of Friday morning.

Photographer Terry Blackburn claimed to have suffered a cut face and bruising after West allegedly pushed his camera into his face.

Police later arrived at West's hotel in nearby Gateshead and detained him on assault charges.

However, after being quizzed by cops, the star was subsequently released without charge.

The hitmaker and his assistant were arrested over a similar incident at Los Angeles' LAX airport in September. The pair was charged with felony vandalism after reportedly smashing a photographer's camera, but the charges were later dropped by the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office.

From the Washington Post: There's increasing chatter in political circles that the Obama camp is not overly happy with the usual suspects for secretary of state these days and that the field might be expanding somewhat beyond Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.), Gov. Bill Richardson (D-N.M.), Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-Neb.) and maybe former Democratic senator Sam Nunn of Georgia. There's talk, indeed, that Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) may now be under consideration for the post. Her office referred any questions to the Obama transition; Obama spokesman Tommy Vietor declined to comment.

And NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports: Two Obama advisers have told NBC News that Hillary Clinton is under consideration to be secretary of state. Would she be interested? Those who know Clinton say possibly. But her office says that any decisions about the transition are up to the president-elect and his team. Clinton was seen taking a flight to Chicago today, but an adviser says it was on personal business. It is unknown whether she had any meeting or conversation with Obama while there.

And according to CNN: One source close to Hillary Clinton tells CNN that as of early yesterday, Senator Clinton had not been contacted by the transition team about a possible cabinet appointment. This same source tells CNN that Senator Clinton would not necessarily dismiss such an offer. A spokesman for Hillary Clinton, Philippe Reines, tells CNN "Any speculation about cabinet or other administration appointments is really for President-Elect Obama's transition team to address." On Monday night, while walking into an awards ceremony in New York, Senator Clinton was asked if she would consider taking a post in the Obama administration. She replied, "I am happy being a Senator from New York, I love this state and this city. I am looking at the long list of things I have to catch up on and do. But I want to be a good partner and I want to do everything I can to make sure his agenda is going to be successful."

Supreme Court to hear case involving film about Hillary Clinton

The Supreme Court voted today to take up a case that mixes Hollywood and Washington and will decide whether a politically charged film can be regulated as a campaign ad.

The justices said they would hear an appeal from a conservative group that produced "Hillary: The Movie," which was released in January. It offered a harsh portrayal of the former first lady and New York senator.

The film's sponsor, a group called Citizens United, made the movie with the anticipation that Clinton would be the Democratic nominee for president. The Federal Election Commission said the group could not advertise the film without running afoul of campaign-funding laws which, among other things, require disclosure of donors.

The McCain-Feingold Act forbids corporate-funded broadcast ads that attack a candidate within a month of a primary or general election. Lawyers for Citizens United said these restrictions were unconstitutional, but they lost in a lower court.

The Supreme Court held on to the group's appeal during the final weeks of election campaign, but announced today it would rule on the case early next year.

James Bopp Jr., counsel for Citizens United, said the restrictions on "Hillary: The Movie" violate the 1st Amendment. "The notion that a feature-length move can be banned is a return to the days of government censorship and book burnings," he said today.

The justices today also agreed to hear a closely watched case involving campaign contributions to state judges and the possibilities for corruption.

In West Virginia, the president of the A.T. Massey Coal Co spent $3 million in 2004 to fund the campaign of Brent Benjamin for the state Supreme Court. His contributions funded 60% of Benjamin's successful campaign.

Shortly after the election, the state high court agreed to hear Massey's appeal of a $50-million verdict against the company in a court case. And despite pleas that he withdraw, Justice Benjamin cast the deciding vote in a 3-2 ruling that overturned the verdict.

Washington lawyer Ted Olson asked the Supreme Court to take up the case and to rule the state verdict violated the Constitution's guarantee of due process of law to permit Justice Benjamin to play the deciding role in such a case.

There is "an unacceptable appearance of bias," Olson wrote, when a wealthy executive can use money to put a new justice on the state court who in turn repays the favor with a helpful ruling.

The high court also held on to this appeal until the election had passed.

The case, known as Caperton vs. A.T. Massey Coal Co., will be heard in February, and will likely put a spotlight on the growing role of big money in state Supreme Court races.

Brad Paisley Wins at CMA Awards With Latest Video !

Brad Paisley has spent most of 2008 in front of country fans, but after Wednesday's (Nov. 12) CMA Awards, Carrie Underwood has certainly seen more of him than most people ever will.

Paisley and Underwood co-hosted the awards show where she was also named the CMA's female vocalist of the year for a third consecutive time.

Asked by a reporter backstage what she'll remember most about the night, she said, "There are a lot of things I'll remember. One is this award. Another is Brad's quick-change from performance to the opening monologue. I've never seen so much of Brad Paisley." After a few chuckles from the pressroom, she continued, "I ruined a couple of jokes. It was a good night. It was a blur. I'd like to go back and watch it and critique it in case we're up for doing something like this again."

After opening the show with "Start a Band," his duet with Keith Urban, Paisley said he only had 45 seconds to change from his performance clothes (jeans and a T-shirt) into a coat and tie to host the show. The part where he was still tying his tie -- along with "... and I'm almost Brad Paisley" joke -- was written into the script to buy him some time.

"We went out there with these expectations that were very high," he said. "We wanted to do a good enough job that people were happy we did this. In a nutshell, that's what you want. It's an amazing thing to think about who has done this before. And more than that, I care a lot about this show and I wanted to do a good job."

Despite a light-hearted approach to her co-hosting duties, Underwood choked up when she reflected on her latest victory as female vocalist.

"It means so much because we worked so hard this year," she said, fighting back tears. "We worked so hard this year, going out touring. It's not just about artists when they win an award. It's about every single person who makes them. Nobody realizes that we're just the face of the machine, you know what I mean? There are so many people behind there, pushing singles and pushing albums. And the fans vote for stuff, and they go out and buy albums and they come to concerts. When somebody wins an award like this, it's a victory for every single person involved. We worked really, really hard this year."

In addition to winning his second trophy as the CMA's male vocalist of the year, Paisley was also eager to share his video of the year victory with Andy Griffith, his co-star in the clip for "Waitin' on a Woman."

"I can't wait to call him and talk to him about it," Paisley said. "I'm sure he's ecstatic. He loves country music as much as anybody, so for something like this to go on his mantle is something that means a lot to me -- and more so to him."

Rascal Flatts won their sixth consecutive award for vocal group of the year. It's their seventh CMA trophy overall, after winning the Horizon Award in 2002. They released Greatest Hits, Volume 1 last month and are currently working on a new album.

"We've still got a statement to make, and we still have something to say," said band member Jay DeMarcus. "We still are growing musically and collectively as a band. And I can't wait to see what we're able to do in the future because I feel like we have a lot of great moments and a lot of great songs and music left in us."

Asked what has kept the band together, DeMarcus said, "From day one, we really tried to put the other person first, and we knew that was going to be the key to staying together because you have differences of opinions, and there will be moments in time where we differ between the three of us. We try to always approach with the respect and love we first started out having for one another, and that's kept us going throughout the years."

Lady Antebellum picked up the new artist award, formerly known as the Horizon Award. (Paisley won it in 2000 and Underwood in 2006.)

"We were so excited about performing tonight, we honestly never thought in a million years that we had a chance of winning," said Hillary Scott, who brought her mother, singer Linda Davis, as her date for the evening. Davis won a CMA Award in 1994 for her duet with Reba McEntire, "Does He Love You."

"It's really a mix of emotions," Scott said. "I didn't attend the CMAs when she won the award with Reba, but I was her date for a couple of different CMA Awards. For her to be here tonight and be my date, and for her to have a crystal trophy on her shelf at home, in the house I grew up in, and for me to be taking one home tonight, is crazy! She's so proud. There was nothing better than sitting there when the nominees were being read off, and holding my mama's hand and knowing that she knew exactly what it felt like."

Actress Hilary Duff, who made her name as the star of the Disney Channel's "Lizzie McGuire", is returning to television in her own series, NBC said on Friday.

Duff, now 21, has signed a one-year development deal with NBC that sees the former teen favorite star getting her own series and appear in other NBC network television shows.

Details of the deal have yet to be worked out for Duff, who launched a movie and singing career on the back of her success as bubbly middle-schooler Lizzie McGuire in the international hit TV show between 2001 and 2004.

Teri Weinberg, executive vice president of NBC Entertainment said Duff was "an incredibly versatile talent with a huge following."

The Texas blond starred in the teen movies "A Cinderella Story" (2004) and "Material Girls" in 2006 and has three movies due for release in 2009 but has yet to recapture the huge popular success she enjoyed with "Lizzie McGuire".

If you were expecting a series of James Bond masterpieces, you will be disappointed by "Quantum of Solace." After the heights of "Casino Royale," the series falls back into routine with this above-average thriller, filled with over-the-top action, familiar Bond atmosphere, and a story that's impossible to follow - and why bother anyway? Daniel Craig is still the coolest man in the universe. That definitely helps.

Oh, but what a rotten life this James Bond has. Remember Sean Connery, and how he made being a secret agent seem like a great job? Remember Roger Moore, almost bursting out of his tuxedo with self-satisfaction, waiting to tell somebody, anybody, that his name was Bond, James Bond? These guys loved their work, and they made you think, gee, I'd like to do that, too.

But no one would want to endure the trials that poor Daniel Craig has to go through in "Quantum of Solace:" A car chase, a car wreck, drive by shootings, crashing through roofs, not to mention an upside-down duel-to-the-death while hanging from a rope . . . And I'm only talking about the first 15 minutes. Ask audiences who see "Quantum of Solace" if they'd rather dig ditches for a living or be James Bond, and you know what they'd say: They'd ask if the ditch-digging job came with benefits.

Perhaps this is the right Bond for our time: Sullen, pessimistic, and putting in extra hours, besides. Of course, this Bond is not merely somber out of his disposition or philosophical inclination. No, Vesper is dead. Remember Vesper (Eva Green), from the last movie? Within the constraints of the action genre, this revitalized series actually cares about the psychological truthfulness of the Bond character. And so, in a wise move, we meet Bond in the aftermath of the last movie. Bond has lost the love of his life. He is sad and, even worse, disillusioned, because he believes that she betrayed him.

He is also still in Italy. We meet him as he drives south from Venice in his inimitable style (firing an automatic weapon out the window). Still looking crisp in his suit, he arrives in Siena, just in time for the annual Palio, the horse race that takes place in the town square every summer. He doesn't get to watch the spectacle. He spends the race interrogating a prisoner and then chasing a defector through a Medieval underground labyrinth. The setting is appropriate. James Bond's lot is to be a modern man in collision with the Medieval sensibility - the deceit, the cloak and dagger stuff, and the dark back alleys, both of cities and of the mind.

"Quantum of Solace" almost never slows down. It should slow down more than it does. It provides no moments to savor, no memorable interludes, no scenes between characters to speak of, and no lines of pithy dialogue to look back on fondly. In overall feeling, it's not unlike the middle film in a trilogy. We're thrown right into the action. There's lots of commotion throughout. And it ends, not prematurely, and yet without a feeling of absolute completion.

The new Bond girl (Olga Kurylenko) is lackluster. Actually, she doesn't have much of a showcase. Bond is too busted up over Vesper to pay her much attention. Mathieu Amalric, as the latest villain, has a snide panache, but he would have been more effective had the script made it clear why he's so evil. Something to do with oil? Something to do with the water supply? He's a little too vague to be terrifying.

Still, three major elements tip this movie's balance into the plus column. There is, first of all, the ineffable Bondness of a Bond movie. This can't be discounted. When Bond walks through the desert, wearing a tuxedo and a bloody shirt, accompanied by a beautiful young woman, the tableau lights up the mind with memories of other movies. This might be the least glamorous Bond movie ever made, but in its style, its visuals and its production, it feels like one of the series. That's important.

On a more tangible level, "Quantum of Solace" benefits from imaginatively conceived action sequences and from a director, Marc Forster, who knows how to film them. Instead of lazily relying on a shaky camera to impart excitement, Forster uses montage. His shots are quick and artfully assembled. Take a look at the opening car chase, which gains all its energy through vigorous cutting. This is a director willing to do the actual work of building a sequence.

Finally, there's Craig, who is at least the franchise's second-best Bond, a real actor who imparts a depth of meaning to seemingly throwaway lines. The filmmakers take care of the trappings. They make Craig look like Bond. They place Craig in the Bond clothes, next to the Bond women, in the Bond locations. And then Craig does his part, by playing Bond as a man, not as an idol.

Jennifer Aniston finally talks about Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt

Jennifer Aniston has no plans to shy away from her comments on Angelina Jolie.

"I basically just answered it as honestly as I could," the "Marley and Me" star told Oprah on her revealing interview in the December issue of Vogue magazine.

Aniston took a jab at her ex-husband's partner in the mag, declaring, "what Angelina did was very uncool."

The snipe comes in response to how Jolie, 33, spilled intimate details about her love affair with Aniston's ex-husband Brad Pitt, 44, in a 2007 interview with the same magazine.

"There was stuff printed there that was definitely from a time when I was unaware that it was happening," says Aniston about how Jolie gushed about the excitement of seeing her then married "Mr. and Mrs. Smith," co-star Pitt everyday. "I felt those details were a little inappropriate to discuss."

Though Aniston obviously still has a sore spot for Jolie, she has nothing but kind words for Pitt, and says the two now enjoy a cordial relationship.

"He's done some amazing things in the last couple of years," she told Oprah in an interview set to air on Thursday. "So I just think he's doing great."

"We have exchanged a few very kind hellos and wishing you wells and sending you love and congratulations on your babies," Aniston tells Vogue writer Jonathan Van Meter, who also conducted Jolie's previous interview.

What Aniston really wants now is for everyone to stop feeling sorry for her. At age 39 the actress says she doesn't want a pity party.

"I actually feel I've been unbelievably lucky in love," Aniston says. "I don't feel like I'm supposed to be any further along or somewhere that I'm not. I'm right where I'm supposed to be."

Right where she is supposed to be now includes continuing a close relationship with her most recent ex-boyfriend musician John Mayer, who is nine years her junior.

"It's funny when you hit a place in a relationship and you both realize, We maybe need to do something else, but you still really, really love each other. I deeply, deeply care about him; we talk, we adore one another. And that's where it is," the actress says.

She doesn't say whether the pair, who split in August and have since been the subject of pregnancy and marriage rumors, have reconciled, but she does admit that she hopes to one day become a mother.

"I've said it so many times: I'm going to have children. I just know it," Aniston says.

The family of Paula Goodspeed is coming to her defense following her apparent suicide outside Paula Abdul's home earlier this week.

"She was not a stalker," Charles McIntyre, Goodspeed's only brother, told E! News Thursday.

McIntyre, who lives with his family in Oakland, Maine, said his sister moved to California five years ago with only one dream: to be a star. "She went down there to have a career, and when she went down in front of those American Idol judges, it was over," said McIntyre. "She was just like anyone else, trying to make it big as an actor or singer."

McIntyre said their mother and Goodspeed's boyfriend are in L.A. waiting for the body to be released from the coroner's on Saturday. The funeral will take place in Maine.

As E! News reported yesterday, Goodspeed was a fan of Abdul since she was a kid. But her brother insisted, "It wasn't excessive like they said on TV."

Despite her disastrous Idol audition and Simon Cowell's predictably withering remarks, McIntyre said he never knew his sister to be depressed. "It did hurt her feelings, but I've never known Paula to be suicidal," said McIntyre.

"She didn't have any mental problems, as far as I know," he said, attempting to refute comments made by law enforcement officials.

"My sister doesn't' have a criminal record, she's clean as clean," McIntyre continued. "She doesn't even have a traffic violation."

McIntyre said his sister claimed she had even met with Abdul personally. "She told me she had coffee with Paula Abdul at a restaurant in 2005," said McIntyre.

Goodspeed, 30, was the youngest sibling in a family of five children.

"She was a great girl," said McIntyre. "I miss my baby sister."

Another Bond film, another debate about the role of women in the long-running franchise.

In "Quantum of Solace," released in the United States on Friday, Olga Kurylenko's character Camille has been held up as a model female foil for today's 007 -- tough, independent, modern.

She shares the movie poster with James Bond, is on a dangerous mission of her own and, unlike most other leading ladies, does not end up in bed with the fictional secret agent.

Not everyone is impressed, however, with several critics calling for more sex, not less, and fan sites arguing that the majority of Bond women, Camille included, are of little consequence to the plot or popularity of the movies.

Rolling Stone magazine, in its review, called Camille "perhaps the dullest Bond girl ever."

The portrayal of Bond women has been argued over since the 22-film franchise kicked off with "Dr. No" 46 years ago, and descriptions of the characters have ranged from under-dressed fodder for a misogynist masterspy to feminist icons.

When Bond producer Barbara Broccoli recently described as "progressive" some of the early female leads, who had careers and were sexual predators in their own right, Fay Weldon, a writer associated with feminism, was quoted as saying:

"These films were attempts by men to keep women in their place and to ensure they still ironed their shirts."

Samantha Weinberg, author of stories about the life of Bond character Miss Moneypenny, jumped to Broccoli's defense.

"Seduction is a two-way street, and as frequently as not, the Bond women were the hunters and 007 their prey," she wrote in the Daily Mail. "Good on them."

WOMEN OF THEIR TIME?

Ukraine-born Kurylenko believes Camille differs from most earlier Bond women.

"Now the Bond girl has become very different, and mine is very different," said the actress, who turns 29 this week.

"This one had a lot more things involved, much more than the others did," Kurylenko told Reuters in a recent interview. "She's very strong, almost an equal to Bond, very feisty, has her own mission, independent. She's just a strong woman."

Bond aficionados argue that while there has been no steady progression from submissive "eye candy" to assertive, independent characters, Bond women tend to reflect the times in which they appear.

"As times change, so does the approach to how Bond's foils are developed," said Tom Buxton of Bond fan site www.mi6.co.uk.

"Political sensitivities have to be considered whilst pushing boundaries at the same time.

"It wasn't until 1973 that Bond was seen in his first inter-racial relationship. During the 1980s ... when the AIDS epidemic was high on the global agenda, there was a conscious design to tone down Bond's rate of conquests. It took 35 years before the lead Bond girl was Asian."

But for Graham Rye, editor of 007 Magazine and author of "The James Bond Girls," Vesper Lynd, played by Eva Green in Craig's first outing as Bond two years ago, eclipsed Camille's "paper thin" character.

"I think the story of Casino Royale, where Bond falls in love with her (Lynd) and she with him, will appeal to women more than a film where he just has sex three or four times."

He added that for all the talk of Camille's strength and independence, the other leading lady in Quantum of Solace, agent Fields, ends up in bed with Bond with almost unseemly haste.

The soundtrack to "Twilight," the upcoming movie hitting theaters November 21st, debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 Albums chart, selling 169,000 copies.

This is the third film soundtrack to hit #1 in 2008, following "Juno" and "Mamma Mia!". The soundtrack features new songs from Paramore, MuteMath, Perry Farrell and the Black Ghosts. It also features two songs from Robert Pattinson, who plays Edward Cullen in the film.

Last week's #1, AC/DC's Black Ice, dropped down to #2 with sales of over 159,000 copiess. The Wal-Mart exclusive album has already sold well over a million copies in its three weeks in release. The "High School Musical 3: Senior Year" soundtrack drops to #3 this week, selling 110,000 copies.

The next highest debut this week, Hinder's Take It to the Limit comes in at #4 with sales of 81,000. Their 2005 album Extreme Behavior sold over 2.7 million copies on the strength of the hit single, "Lips of an Angel."

Pink's Funhouse drops to #5 in it's second week, with sales of 73,000. The album debuted last week at #2. John Legend's Evolver drops to #6 from last week, not far behind Pink with sales with 72,000. T.I. continues at #7 for a second week with only a 10% sales slip.

Andrea Bocelli's latest album, Incanto, debuts at # 8 this week selling 62,000 copies. His last album, 2006's Amore, debuted at #6. A parole review official on Monday refused to release the convicted felon questioned in the killings of Jennifer Hudson's mother, brother and nephew, after a witness reported seeing him with a gun similar to the one used in the slayings.

A 35-minute hearing ended with a decision that there is probable cause to believe that William Balfour, Hudson's estranged brother-in-law, violated parole and should be held until a Dec. 3 hearing before the full Illinois Prisoner Review Board.

Balfour has been questioned, but not charged, in the killings. Authorities have called him a "person of interest."

During Monday's hearing by a member of the review board, Balfour denied any involvement in the crime, including the allegations that he had been seen with a gun.

"He seemed to be disturbed. He contested those allegations" about the gun, Board Chairman Jorge Montes said after the hearing. "He was protesting the introduction of that evidence and he denied it."

Balfour, 27, has been in custody since the day the bodies of Hudson's mother and brother were discovered at the family's Chicago home. After 48 hours — the longest Chicago police can hold anyone without charges — he was taken by the Illinois Department of Corrections on a parole violation.

Balfour — the estranged husband of Jennifer Hudson's older sister, Julia Hudson — served seven years for a 1999 attempted murder and vehicular hijacking conviction.

Jeanetta Cardine, an executive with the prisoner review board, was told during Monday's hearing that a woman described as Balfour's current or former girlfriend has told investigators she saw him with a gun matching the description of the .45-caliber weapon used in the three killings.

While Cardine found probable cause to believe Balfour violated other conditions of his parole, including failing to get anger management and substance abuse counseling, Montes said the gun allegation alone was enough to keep the man in custody.

"That's a very serious allegation," Montes said. "If somebody's alleging they saw him with a gun that was used in the murder of three individuals, we would definitely hold" him.

Montes said the information about the woman's statements came from the Cook County State's Attorney's office.

Representatives of the state's attorney's office and the police department declined to comment.

The bodies of 57-year-old Darnell Donerson and 29-year-old Jason Hudson were discovered Oct. 24 at the family's home. Three days later, 7-year-old Julian King's body was found in a sport utility vehicle on the city's West Side.

Officers found the gun in a vacant lot in the neighborhood where Julian's body was found.

Balfour did not have an attorney at Monday's hearing; the Cook County Public Defender's office said he has not been assigned one because he hasn't been charged with a crime.

Pop star Britney Spears rushed her 2-year-old son to the hospital over the weekend after he fell ill during a family trip to her Louisiana home town, celebrity news sites reported on Monday.

Entertainment Tonight, quoting an unidentified source, said Jayden James was rushed to the emergency room on Sunday when he became ill during the trip and was admitted overnight.

People magazine, quoting a source close to the family, said Jayden had suffered "a terrible allergic reaction. He had hives, was itchy and irritable."

But the source said Jayden "is doing fine" and Spears and her mother, Lynne, spent the night at the hospital with him.

Britain's Daily Mail reported that the toddler suffered an apparent seizure at the family home in Kentwood, Louisiana, and was rushed to the Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center in Mississippi.

A spokeswoman for the clinic declined to comment when asked about the report, and Spears' Los Angeles-based agent was not immediately available to comment.

Photographers outside the hospital took pictures of Spears' family coming and going there.

The trip marked the first time 26-year-old Spears had been allowed to leave California with sons Sean Preston, 3, and Jayden since their father Kevin Federline was given full custody in July.

The US Secret Service has blamed Republican vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin for the death threats against president-elect Barack Obama.

According to the agents, Palin’s repeated questioning of Obama’s patriotism sparked off the death threats from white supremacists.

According to The Telegraph of London, Palin attracted criticism for accusing Obama of "palling around with terrorists", citing his association with the 1960s radical William Ayers.

In actual sense, the only thing that Ayers, now a university professor in Chicago, shared with Obama is that they both sat on a school board. Ayers’s subversive activities were reported in the 1960s when Obama was a toddler.

The attacks provoked a near lynch mob atmosphere at her rallies, with supporters yelling "terrorist" and "kill him" at Obama until the McCain campaign ordered her to tone down the rhetoric.

But it has now emerged that her demagogic tone may have unintentionally encouraged white supremacists to go even further.

The Secret Service warned the Obama family last month that they had seen a dramatic increase in the number of threats against the Democratic candidate, coinciding with Palin’s attacks.

Furious First Lady

Michelle Obama, the future First Lady, was so upset that she turned to her friend and campaign adviser Valerie Jarrett to ask: "Why would they try to make people hate us?"

The revelations, contained in a Newsweek history of the campaign, are likely to further damage Palin’s credentials as a future presidential candidate.

Intelligence analysts Stratfor have already warned that Obama is a high-risk target for racist gunmen.

"Two plots to assassinate Obama were broken up during the campaign season, and several more remain under investigation. We would expect federal authorities to uncover many more plots to attack the president that have been hatched by white supremacist ideologues," it said.

McCain aides blame Palin for losing the election, branding her a "diva" and a "whack job" on account of her heavy

spending for her campaign wardrobe, including designer duds, sprayed-on tans and fancy underwear.On top of the $150,000 (around Sh12 million) first outlined in Federal Election Commission filings, Palin spent "tens of thousands of dollars" on additional clothing, makeup and jewelry for herself and her family, including $40,000 (Sh3.2 million) in luxury goods for her husband, Todd.

Campaign charged

The campaign was charged for silk boxer shorts, spray tanners and 13 suitcases to carry all the designer clothes, according to Republican insiders.

Sources said the expenses were put on the personal credit cards of low-level Palin staffers.

They were only discovered when they asked party officials for reimbursement.

Financial disclosure statements documented by Politico.com show the retail outlay for Palin and her family since early September included a $75,062.63 (Sh6 million) expenditure that resulted in a combined tab of $49,425.74, (Sh4 million) all paid by the Republican National Committee.

Hair and makeup accounted for another $4,716.49 (Sh3.8 million) billed to the RNC in September, with no such costs reported in August. (October expenditures have not yet been made public)

The Times of London notes that Palin appears not to have been photographed in the same outfit twice during the campaign.

In a statement sent to many mainstream media outlets, spokesperson for the John McCain and Sarah Palin campaign, Tracey Schmitt, said: "With all of the important issues facing the country right now, it’s remarkable that we’re spending time talking about pantsuits and blouses.

Clothing to charity

It was always the intent that the clothing go to a charitable purpose after the campaign."

To crown it all, details have emerged about Palin’s unbelievable extent of her foreign policy ignorance, the most surprising being that "she thought Africa is a country, not a continent."

Incidentally, Palin prematurely launched the first Ayers attack even without the approval of Republican presidential candidate John McCain’s team.

When she left Alaska in August to run as the Republican vice presidential candidate, Sarah Palin was a much-loved governor with approval ratings near 90 percent; a record for pursuing centrist, bipartisan policies; and a reputation as a corruption-fighter.Her home state was awash in money, thanks to record oil prices, and residents were set to get big checks in the form of dividends from the Alaska Permanent Fund and a state tax rebate. The economic future seemed secure, with Governor Palin advancing the case for a big, new, natural-gas pipeline.

What a difference a couple of months make.

Upon her return to Alaska Nov. 5, Palin’s nonpartisan reputation is in shreds, a side effect of her role as chief attacker of Democratic rival Barack Obama. Damaged, too, is her image as ethics reformer, with questions lingering over an abuse-of-power scandal involving a feud against her sister’s ex-husband, alleged circumvention of public-records laws, concerns about state payments for her children’s travel and nights spent in her own home, and even how she acquired the haute-couture wardrobe she sported on the campaign trail.
Palin, in her first moments back as full-time governor, urged opponents to let bygones be bygones.

“Nobody should have hurt feelings,” she said at the Anchorage airport the night she returned to Alaska. “My goodness, this is politics. Politics is rough and tumble, and people need to get thick skins, just like I’ve gotten.”

That goes for the incoming president, she added. “The voters have chosen their leader. Now it’s our opportunity to reach out to President-elect Obama, get him to see the light in terms of what Alaska has to contribute, to offer. I can’t wait to get to work with him.”

Mending fences may not be that easy. The governor’s old bipartisan coalition is gone, says state Rep. Les Gara, a Democrat who was a Palin ally on key oil and gas issues.

“You probably now have a lot of Republicans who like our governor and a lot of Democrats who are offended about the things she said about President-elect Obama. I’m offended that she said he was a terrorist sympathizer,” says Mr. Gara, an Obama supporter.

Alaska is not the same now, either. Oil prices have tumbled back to earth from the record levels that had padded the state treasury, meaning budget deficits may lie ahead. The global financial crisis is worsening prospects for the $30 billion North Slope natural-gas pipeline that Alaskans have sought to build since the 1970s. And it’s not yet certain that Sen. Ted Stevens, who has represented Alaska in the US Senate almost as long as Palin has been alive, will prevail in his reelection bid.

Senator Stevens, the longest serving Republican in the Senate, was clinging to a 3,257-vote lead as of Nov. 5. Vote counting will resume Nov. 12, according to the Alaska Division of Elections.

The vote results, in the face of the guilty verdict returned against Stevens two weeks ago in his federal corruption trial, showed an unshakable reservoir of loyalty to the senator, says Andrew Halcro, a former Republican state legislator who publishes an Alaska political blog and hosts a radio talk show. “I don’t know if it should make you proud or make you a little uncomfortable,” Mr. Halcro said as the results rolled in on election night.

Palin’s approval ratings are now in the 60 percent range, lower than she previously enjoyed but still in positive territory. Her job at home has just been made harder, though, by global oil markets.

The current budget assumes that North Slope crude prices will average $83 a barrel. Because prices were so high earlier this year, they would have to fall below $60 a barrel for the rest of the year to put the state into a budget hole, says Revenue Commissioner Pat Galvin. “It’s been way up, so that gave us a cushion,” he says. (Oil on the global market closed Friday at $61 a barrel.)

Prospects have dimmed, too, for continued federal largess.

Stevens, famous for the billions of federal dollars he has steered to Alaska, campaigned on the message that Alaska needs his continued representation in the Senate.

“We’re about ready to enter a recession, maybe even a depression, and this state is supported to a great extent by federal activities. Almost 40 percent of the jobs in this state are directly related to annual appropriations. Now why would you want to send a new person down to try to enter into that field, a person with no experience at all?” Stevens said Oct. 30 in his only face-to-face debate against his rival, Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich.

Stevens vowed he will continue to get that money for Alaska despite his Oct. 27 conviction on seven felony corruption counts – a problem he has dismissed as a technicality, along with Senate colleagues’ pledges to eject him from the Senate. “This business about not seating me is wrong. They’re not going to reject me in the Senate. I have great standing across the aisle…. I don’t think there’s any senator who’s sitting right now who has the friendships that I do across the aisle,” Stevens said during the debate.

At a “welcome home” rally two days after the verdict – held at the Anchorage airport that is named for Stevens – the tone was defiant. Several Stevens supporters wore T-shirts with an unprintable slur against “the Feds.” National politicians who have called for Stevens to resign “can kiss my Alaska moose-hunting behind, because I know Ted and I’m sticking with him,” Rick Rydell, an Anchorage radio talk-show host and the emcee at the rally, told the crowd. “Twelve jurors in D.C. don’t know Ted. I know Ted.”

No matter what happens to Stevens, the US government can no longer afford the generous budget earmarks he used to secure for Alaska, says state Rep. Beth Kerttula (D), minority leader in the Alaska House of Representatives. “We could reelect Ted Stevens all day long, but that’s not going to change the fact that the earmarks are gone,” she says.

The Stevens quandary may ultimately create an opening for Palin to return to the national stage. She has called for him to resign. If he ekes out a victory but then resigns or is ejected from the Senate, Alaska will have to hold a special election within 90 days to fill the seat.

Though she has denied interest – “I tell you, this is the best job in the world, being the governor of the state,” Palin said on her first day back at work in her Anchorage office – the governor is a likely Republican candidate.

Palin’s supporters here have their eyes on a bigger prize.

“Two thousand twelve! Two thousand twelve!” chanted fans who met the governor at the Anchorage airport when she returned from the campaign trail. Arianne Herglotz and Starr Bynum, longtime Palin friends from the Beehive Beauty Shop in Wasilla, were among those wearing buttons displaying a lipstick imprint of a kiss and the slogan: “Palin for President 2012.”

“She’ll go further now that this has happened,” Ms. Bynum says. “I think it just energized her more to do a better job here, the best she can and keep on going.”

Some Alaska leaders expect Palin’s national ambitions to affect actions at home.

“I believe that Sarah Palin, Governor Palin, will make a run for president in four years. I’m trying to just determine how long it’s going to be before she begins a campaign,” says House Speaker John Harris, a Republican. “Does it start with our next gubernatorial election, or does it start before then?”

"I was thinking of only adoptive children, but he saw a big family mixed with adoptive and born children. And I ended up falling in love with a man who I think was destined to have children and suddenly one day it felt right and there it was."

Their family of eight -- which includes children Maddox Chivan, 7, Pax Thien, turning 5 this month, Zahara Marley, 3 ½, Shiloh Nouvel, 2, and 3 ½-month-old twins Knox Léon and Vivienne Marcheline -- view the word 'adoption' as something to celebrate, and not shy away from. "We talk about orphanages, we talk about their countries and differences, and it's a source of excitement and pride," Angelina says.

"I've heard Maddox explain to Zahara when they are talking about pregnancy, 'No, Zee, remember, you were in that nice African woman's belly. I was in that nice Cambodian woman.'"

Breastfeeding the twins has made Angelina even more voluptuous than usual, much to Brad's delight! "I'm with a man who sees the beauty in the journey the mother’s body takes, as I think all men should," she says. "But some men just don't, unfortunately." So inspired by Angelina's nursing relationship with the twins was Brad, he agreed to photograph the act for W magazine to coincide with the release of her new film Changeling. Angelina says she agreed to the "one week project" because "it didn't feel right having a photographer fly across the world with a rack of stylish clothes" for her to wear. While some readers may have taken issue with the cover, Angelina says that what eventually made it's way onto the pages of the magazine represents some of Brad's less risqué work.

"We'd look at the pictures as art and say this is a really interesting photograph, but then we’d know better and we'd think about how it was going to be received. So we made it a little more tame than it was originally."

The photo spread is just one of many things Angelina knows she'll someday undoubtedly need to discuss with the kids, but if she's worried about having those conversations, she isn't showing it. "I think it's going to be that they'll understand they can talk to me about everything, and that by the time they get to be teenagers we'll have formed a sufficient bond," she says. "We tell them everything, we're honest with them...My mother was that way with me." It would appear, then, that the Jolie-Pitt children know that their ranks will only continue to grow. "Most likely we'll adopt again," Angelina says.

"As we layer them in, with two new ones, we're watching that balance, that shape and form, and once we feel that's solid, we’ll know when it’s time to bring in another."

The Australian actress will star in and produce "The Danish Girl," based on the true story of Danish artists Einar and Greta Wegener. Their marriage took a sharp left turn after Einar (Kidman) stood in for a female model that Greta (Theron) was set to paint.

When their portraits become wildly popular in 1920s Copenhagen, Greta encouraged her husband to adopt the female guise. What began as a harmless game led Einer to a metamorphosis and landmark 1931 operation that shocked the world and threatened their love.

Anand Tucker ("Shopgirl") is attached to direct the feature, adapted by writer Lucinda Coxon ("Wild Target") from David Ebershoff's 2000 Viking bestseller. His debut novel of the same name is a fictionalized account of the Wegeners' true story.

Pre-production has begun on the indie film, but no details on a principal photography start date have been disclosed.

Both Kidman and Theron earned their best actress Oscars playing lesbian characters, in "The Hours" and "Monster," respectively. Additionally, Kidman is attached to play Dusty Springfield in a biopic about the bisexual English singer.

Over at JJB, someone managed to dig up some video footage of the Barack Obama rally in Chicago last night, in Grant Park. A reporter was interviewing celebrities and regular people alike before the news broke that Obama had won. Last night we heard news that Brad Pitt was also at Grant Park to watch and celebrate.

Just past the 2-minute mark, you can see Brad and hear a little bit of audio saying that he will be very happy. It’s brief, but he’s there.

I’m so glad that despite his enormous celebrity status Brad was able to just be an American citizen last night, enjoying his candidate’s win like any other regular American could. Good for him!

Don’t forget to stay tuned for Brad’s appearance on Oprah sometime later this month. The official show date has not yet been released, though I’ve heard rumors that his segment will be taped sometime very soon. You can see the promo for Oprah’s November guests and shows here.

Angelina Jolie was no doubt attracted to the role of Christine Collins in “Changeling” because it gives her the chance to play a fiercely protective mother in a sumptuous period film (it’s set in 1928 Los Angeles). It’s a fitting match for the famously maternal actress whose sensuality and style have always seemed more suited to old Hollywood.

Director Clint Eastwood, working from a fact-based script by J. Michael Straczynski, delivers a solidly crafted and beautifully photographed film chock full of period detail. But this story of a missing child and a mother’s determination to find him goes off in several different directions and never really gels. Eastwood mixes in the most disturbing parts of his “Mystic River” into “Changeling” in grisly scenes of child abuse as the police investigate the serial murders of little boys, one of whom could be Collins’ son.

When Collins battles the corrupt LAPD, the film turns into a feminist quest for justice. And for good measure, Eastwood recycles the most harrowing scenes in “Frances” as Collins is thrown into the snake pit by the evil LAPD as punishment for her defiance.As she did with Marianne Pearl in “A Mighty Heart,” Jolie embraces this passionate portrait of a woman who won’t give up searching for a missing loved one. But Christine Collins is never as complex a character. She’s a single working mother who reluctantly fills in for a sick coworker one day, leaving her nine-year-old son Walter at home in a nice, residential neighborhood.

When she returns, the house is eerily empty. Frantic, Collins turns to the police but finds little help. Months later, amid much press hoopla and grandstanding, the police deliver “Walter” to her and smugly ignore her protests that the boy isn’t her son. Captain J.J. Jones (Jeffery Donovan) goes so far as to berate and threaten Collins if she continues to embarrass the LAPD. Collins finally gains an ally in somber Presbyterian minister Gustav Briegleb (John Malkovich) who has made it his own crusade to expose the widespread corruption in the LAPD.Since Collins is so completely sympathetic and Captain Jones so completely the villain, there’s little room for growth or nuance. We’re rooting for Collins from the moment she questions the police department’s ineptitude. When Captain Jones has her secretly tossed into a psychiatric ward where the head doctor insists she’s crazy and won’t release her until she admits she wrongfully accused the police of persecution, “Changeling” veers into social justice terrain. Collins meets Carol Dexter, played by Amy Ryan, who is as brilliant in this small, dramatic role as she is in her comic one on TV’s “The Office.” Dexter explains to Collins that she and other women who openly criticized the LAPD for its abuse of power ended up in the nuthouse as retaliation.Once she’s sprung by Rev. Briegleb amid public support, Collins makes it her personal mission to get Dexter and the other women out, and bring down the LAPD. “Changeling” again changes gears, as another boy comes forth to expose a serial killer who preys on young boys and who may have murdered Walter. The final third of the film cuts between two trials: one for the man accused of murdering three children (none of them Walter) and the police corruption trial in which Collins provides key testimony.“Changeling” isn’t as powerfully entertaining as, say, “L.A. Confidential” or “Chinatown” in its expose of LAPD corruption, nor does it provide a cathartic arc for Collins who remains right in her convictions from the start and only grows more passionate. One can’t help wishing Eastwood was as sure-handed with the direction of his story as he is with the look of the film, or that Jolie had more to work with. She is terrific, but the film shortchanges her fervor.

Sarah Palin GOP gears up for 2012 (Video) !

Votes are still being counted in some races in last Tuesday’s election, but no matter: talk of the potential Republicans field in the 2012 presidential election is already underway.

Too early?

Too bad - just look around.
Two potential candidates will be in Iowa before month’s end, multiple prospects - almost certainly including Sarah Palin - will make high-profile appearances next week at the Republican Governor’s Association (RGA) meeting and Newt Gingrich’s name has already being floated in a Bob Novak column.

For a party anxious to move past a brutal election up and down the ballot, and especially a presidential campaign they’d just as soon forget, it’s not too soon to start thinking about ‘next time,’ as the pros call it.

Now, officially of course, any talk of a presidential run is verboten.

“Oh man,” drawled Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, when asked about 2012 and specifically his own interest in a possible presidential run. “I’m going to tell you something. One of the worst things that can happen to the Republican Party in our effort to rebuild is for a bunch of people to start running for president. Anybody harboring that ambition needs to squelch it until after 2010 … Anybody out there running for president is undercutting what’s important. You do this against your own interest.”Following Barbour’s admonition, every likely candidate asked the same question by Politico demurred in all the time-honored ways politicians demur about such questions.

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee: “That’s way too far away.”

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal: “The most important thing I can do is be the best governor of Louisiana”

South Dakota Sen. John Thune: “I’m just looking to help the team.”Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty: “My day job is an honor and a privilege, and my focus is here.”

That is, according to the holy “don’t-get-beyond-the-next-cycle” writ of presidential politics, what they must say.

But don’t watch their mouths – keep an eye on their feet.

Huckabee, winner of the 2008 Iowa caucuses, returns to the Hawkeye State on November 20th for stops in Cedar Rapids and Des Moines to hawk his new book, “Do the Right Thing: Inside the Movement That's Bringing Common Sense Back to America.”

Huckabee, who is making his trek in a campaign-style bus with his likeness emblazoned on the side, is also slated to make five stops in South Carolina. The Palmetto State is home to the first-in-the-South GOP primary and a reliable indicator of who will get the party’s nomination in every primary since 1980. It was also Huckabee’s Waterloo this year, the place where he saw his presidential hopes slip away when Fred Thompson and Mitt Romney cut into his conservative vote share and enabled John McCain to snare a plurality win.The book, he said, “makes the connection between conservative fiscal and social policy.”

“The size and scope of government is related to the way people behave,” noted Huckabee, who is also keeping his name fresh in the minds of Republican activists with a weekly talk show on Fox News.

Jindal, elected governor of Louisiana in 2007 after serving in Congress and holding health care posts in state and federal government, makes his first trip to Iowa on November 22nd.

He’s keynoting the statewide banquet of the Iowa Family Policy Center, a Christian conservative group, in suburban Des Moines and will tour flood-ravaged Cedar Rapids, offering his insights as a hurricane-state governor to state and local officials.

Though only 37 and in his first year in statewide office, Jindal is already drawing rave reviews.

Asked in a post-election chat which Republican office-holders impressed him during the campaign, McCain campaign chief Steve Schmidt didn’t hesitate: “Bobby Jindal, no question.”

Anti-tax crusader Grover Norquist, who wanted Jindal to be McCain’s vice-presidential nominee this year, said flatly: “Jindal will be president. I don’t know the year.”

Thune, who is eyeing a Senate leadership post, will likely keep the majority of his travel confined between the Badlands and Siouxland. The freshman senator is up for re-election in 2010 and Democrats would like nothing more then knock him off and ensure that their tall, handsome, hoops-loving president doesn’t have to worry about facing a tall, handsome, hoops-loving Republican in 2012. That he also knocked off Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, a close Barack Obama confidante, only adds to Democratic desire to send him the way of George Allen.

But to get a sense of Thune’s ambitions, look back, not foreword, on the calendar. Since coming to the Senate, he’s been a hot ticket for GOP Lincoln Day dinners. Freshman senators from the Great Plains senators don’t trek to such party fundraisers in Kent County, Michigan (Grand Rapids) and Hillsborough County, Florida (Tampa) because they like the chicken and rice pilaf.

Pawlenty, a runner-up in McCain’s veepstakes and frequent surrogate for the Arizona senator, will make his presence known this week in Miami, when the RGA holds its annual conference. He’ll be featured at the kick-off luncheon and then appear at two more open press roundtables in what will effectively be the first of many GOP cattle calls ahead of the 2012 contest.

Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, another potential 2012 aspirant and the event’s host, will close the session by giving a speech Thursday night focused on broadening the party, according to his closet political adviser.

“We can’t win with what we have right now,” said George LeMieux, who ran Crist’s 2006 gubernatorial run, a rare bright spot in a difficult cycle for Republicans.

Crist made inroads with African-Americans in his 2006 race and feels strongly about making the GOP more inclusive – a demographic imperative made clear by Tuesday’s election.

Predictably, LeMieux offered a standard-issue demurral on behalf of Crist when asked about 2012.

Barbour, Jindal and other prospects such as Texas Gov. Rick Perry, South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford and Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman will also brave the November weather at the InterContinental Miami.

But there is little doubt who will be the star of the show: Palin is virtually certain to make her first official post-election public appearance in the Lower 48 at the RGA, according to GOP sources.

Asked about a future run by CNN’s Dana Bash in the Phoenix Biltmore lobby on Wednesday, Palin observed: “2012 sounds so far off that I can't even imagine what I'd be doing then.”

A source close to the Alaska governor says she has been bruised by the finger-pointing in her direction by anonymous campaign aides – something made plain by her denunciation of them as “cowards” upon returning home Friday – but that she’s also “clearly an ambitious woman.”

Then there is Mitt Romney.

The former Massachusetts governor was a dogged surrogate on McCain’s behalf after their sometimes-bitter primary campaign and retains a loyal following in the party.

He declined an interview – he’s actually in Alaska on a cruise sponsored by National Review, a magazine that endorsed him in the GOP primary -- but sources close to the CEO-turned-politician say he’s very much uncertain about whether he’ll run for elective office again and is keeping a close eye on what direction the party takes in the months ahead, especially with regards to Palin.

Romney is extraordinarily close to his family, and most are opposed to another run.

He is, though, likely to stay involved at least at a policy level.

“What I’d say is he’s keeping his options open for now,” said one source close to Romney.

And as for Gingrich, the always-plugged-in Novak seems to think he’s running, and other longtime Republicans around Washington say the same of the former House Speaker.

His spokesman, Rick Tyler, even hints that it may be a possibility – edging dangerously close to speaking the unspeakable.

“We’ll see what Barack Obama does,” said Tyler.

Sarah Palin threats against Obama ?

The defeated Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin has been blamed by the Secret Service for provoking a spike in death threats against US President-elect Barack Obama.

During the bitter election campaign, the Alaskan governor had questioned Obama's patriotism and accused him of "palling around with terrorists", citing his links with the sixties radical William Ayers.
Palin's demagogic tone may have unintentionally encouraged white supremacists to plan attacks on the future president of the US.

The Secret Service warned the Obama family last month that they had seen a dramatic surge in threats against the Democratic leader, coinciding with Palin's attacks, the Daily Telegraph newspaper has reported.

The latest details of the increase in threats to Obama come as a report by a top think tank last week had warned that he is a high risk target for racist gunmen.

"Two plots to assassinate Obama were broken up during the campaign season, and several more remain under investigation. We would expect federal authorities to uncover many more plots to attack the president that have been hatched by white supremacist ideologues," warned Stratfor, a security and intelligence analysts.

The verbal attacks by Palin on Obama had provoked a near lynch mob atmosphere at her rallies, with supporters yelling "terrorist" and "kill him" until the McCain campaign ordered her to tone down the rhetoric, the British daily said.

It had rattled Michelle Obama, the wife of the African American leader, who turned to campaign adviser Valerie Jarrett for advice. "Why would they try to make people hate us?" the upset future First Lady wondered.

According to the news report, the revelations, contained in a Newsweek history of the campaign, is likely to create more controversy linked to Palin, who has been under criticism by anonymous John McCain staffers in a frenzy of finger-pointing after the poll defeat.

It could severely damage Palin's credentials as a future presidential candidate, who is seen as a frontrunner with Indian American Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal in four years time.

Anonymously sourced stories claim Palin went ahead to question Obama's patriotism even before the line of attack had been cleared by the Arizona senator.

The claims include that the former beauty queen went on shopping sprees on the Republican Party's dime, didn't know Africa is a continent and threw tantrums that left staff in tears.

Palin has spoken out against reports critical of her behavior on the campaign trail, saying "it's immature, it's unprofessional and those guys are jerks." Her supporters said it's just people trying to scapegoat the governor for the unsuccessful presidential campaign.

It's unprofessional and those guys are jerks if they came away with it, taking things out of context, and then tried to spread something on national news." What Jerks! Sarah Palin has been under fire by unnamed John McCain aides since the Republicans lost the presidential election Tuesday.

Sources within the McCain camp have told the media that the vice presidential nominee didn't know Africa was a continent, and that she and her family were "Wasilla hillbillies" - spending much more than the originally reported $150,000 on clothes from upscale department stores.

Now Palin - who apologized earlier for causing McCain to lose even one vote - is fighting back.

In an interview with CNN Friday, the angry governor of Alaska calls the unnamed tipsters "cowardly" and "jerks."

"I consider [anonymous sources] cowardly," she says.

Palin tells CNN "it's not true" that she didn't know the countries in the North American Free Trade Agreement - Canada, the U.S. and Mexico.

"I remember having a conversation with a couple debate preppers, so if it came from one of those debate preppers, that’s curious," she says in a tense voice. Watch the video above.

"But [it was] a discussion about NAFTA, not 'Oh my goodness, I don't know who's a part of NAFTA,'" she says. "So now, if there are allegations are based on the questions or comments I made in debate prep about NAFTA, or about the continent vs. the country when we talk about Africa there, then those were taken out of context there."

She continues: "And that's cruel, it's unfair, it's mean-spirited, it's unprofessional, and those guys are jerks if they came away with it, taking it out of context, and tried to spread something on national news. That's not fair and not right."

But Palin says most of the media coverage of her has been accurate.

"For the most part, absolutely, media persons, reporters have been absolutely right on," she says. "And there has been that fairness and objectivity.

"There have been some stinkers, though, that made the whole basket full a’ apples, there, once in a while, smell kinda' bad," she adds.

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has received her first job offer since failing in her bid to become vice-president of the United States - to appear in a porno movie.

Florida-based porn director Cezar Capone has offered to pay Palin $2 million to appear in an adult film production.

Capone promises in an open letter on his website that the film would be distributed internationally, shot in high definition, and feature a "beautiful mother recognized by all of America as well as the rest of the world - the most desirable woman over 40."

To prove he's serious about the offer, Capone says he's prepared to hold the money in escrow immediately.

To sweeten the deal, Palin's husband Todd has been offered a co-starring role in the production, for which Capone would be "prepared to kick in an extra $100,000," and a new Arctic Cat snowmobile.

Palin hasn't publicly responded to the offer, which was sent to her administration office in Juneau, Alaska, on Nov. 6.

You've got to have really, really thick skin, and you’ve got to be so determined and focused on the mission you are on."

At his first news conference this afternoon, President-elect Barack Obama elaborated on his family’s quest to get a dog; after a reporter in the crowd asked him about the issue. Here’s a rough version of his answer:

“This is a major issue. It has generated more interest on our website than just about anything else. We have two criteria that have to be reconciled. One is Malia is allergic so it has to hypoallergenic. Two, our preference is to get a shelter dog, but alot of shelter dogs are mutts like me. Whether we’re able to do this or not is a huge issue in the Obama household.”

So, good news that the Obama family is still planning on picking up a pup from the shelter! As we figured, they’re having trouble balancing Malia’s allergies with the rescue desire — but PAWS Chicago Adoption Center is ready to help the first family with that issue. Variety reports that Spielberg and Smith are currently in early discussions to join forces for the very first time, on a remake of Chan Wook Park's 2003 drama 'Oldboy.'

The trade paper says if Spielberg is given the green light for the movie, the jack-of-all-trades Smith would be cast in the lead role as a man who avenges his mysterious kidnapping. Plans for the film have not been finalized as DreamWorks is trying to acquire the rights to the original film, and the new version would be distributed by Universal.

"They are going to be onstage performing with Madonna," E! News' Ryan Seacrest said on KIIS-FM host BoyToy Jesse's Wednesday afternoon show. The Material Girl will be at Dodger Stadium for the latest stop on her Sticky & Sweet Tour, and if Seacrest has his facts right, Timberlake and Spears will be by her side.

"If Justin and Britney end up on that stage with her ... I don't know if I've ever seen anything quite like that before," he said. "Expect some real serious surprises." He added that he might have more details on Thursday before the anticipated collaboration would reportedly go down.

In related news, TMZ reports that on Wednesday afternoon, the roof of the stage where the trio will reportedly perform began to lean. Dodger Stadium sources told the Web site that the stage will be repaired for Thursday's show.

Spears, Timberlake and Madonna have all collaborated with one another, but never as a trio. Timberlake and Madonna have spent a lot of time together this year: Timberlake worked on a number of tracks for her Hard Candy album, made a special appearance at her "secret" NYC club show and introduced the legendary pop star when she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in March.

Madonna appeared on Spears' "Me Against the Music" in 2003, and famously kissed the younger singer (and Christina Aguilera) during a Video Music Awards performance that year.

Michael Crichton -- whose books were made into films including "Jurassic Park" and "The Andromeda Strain" -- died Tuesday. He was 66.

The author died "after a courageous and private battle against cancer," according to his Web site. A statement on MichaelCrichton.net said Crichton died "unexpectedly" in Los Angeles.

Crichton was a brand-name author, known for his stories of disaster and systematic breakdown, such as the rampant microbe of "Andromeda" or dinosaurs running amok in "Jurassic Park," one of his many books that spawned major Hollywood movies.

Crichton also was a screenwriter and filmmaker, earning producing and writing credits for the film versions of many of his titles. He also created the NBC hospital drama "ER" in 1994.

"Michael was an extraordinary man. Brilliant, funny, erudite, gracious, exceptionally inquisitive and always thoughtful," "ER" executive producer John Wells said Wednesday. "No lunch with Michael lasted less than three hours, and no subject was too prosaic or obscure to attract his interest. Sexual politics, medical and scientific ethics, anthropology, archeology, economics, astronomy, astrology, quantum physics, and molecular biology were all regular topics of conversation. I was blessed to have known him and proud to be able to have called him my friend."

In recent years, Crichton was the rare writer to get on well with President Bush, perhaps because of his skepticism about global warming, which Crichton addressed in the 2004 novel "State of Favor." Crichton's views were strongly condemned by environmentalists, who alleged that he was hurting efforts to pass legislation to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide.

A new novel by Crichton had been tentatively scheduled to come next month, but publisher HarperCollins said the book was postponed indefinitely because of his illness.

'GREAT STORYTELLER'

Born in Chicago on October 23, 1942, Crichton wrote his first novels under pen names while attending Harvard Medical School. He was awarded his medical degree in 1969, the same year his first major bestseller, "The Andromeda Strain," was published.

Most of his action-based books reflected his medical training, including "The Andromeda Strain," a techno-thriller about scientists battling a killer microorganism accidentally brought back to Earth by a satellite.

"Andromeda" also was the first novel by Crichton to be made into a Hollywood film. He followed that success with "The Terminal Man," "The Great Train Robbery" and "Congo."

But Crichton eclipsed those novels with "Jurassic Park" and "The Lost World," which became two of the top-grossing films of the 1990s. He also co-wrote the screenplay for "Jurassic Park" and for the 1996 tornado thriller "Twister."

Crichton won a number of writing and film awards and an Emmy for his work on "ER," the popular and long-running NBC television hospital drama currently in its final season.

The first lady elect donned an eye-catching shift straight off the runway from the designer's upcoming Spring 2009 collection for her husband's big night.
